American Red Cross Classes
Are you interested in becoming a lifeguard or do you need to re-certify so your certificate remains valid? Are you a certified lifeguard who would like to pass your knowledge onto others? If so, check out our classes!
The first step to becoming a lifeguard is to register and pass the pre-test. This is a requirement for all candidates seeking certification and for those re-certifying.
After passing the pre-test, you may register for the lifeguarding class associated with the pre-test, which is described below. (Please DO NOT sign up for a pretest if you are unable to attend that month’s class). The maximum number of participants in a class is 10; our classes typically fill up quickly so we encourage you to register early! You can register online or at the Front Desk.
To be eligible to take the Lifeguard Certification and Recertification courses, all students must complete the following:
-Swim 300 yards using any combination of freestyle and breaststroke along with rhythmic breathing and good technique.
-Swim 20 yards, surface dive and retrieve a 10lb brick and carry it while kicking on his/her back to the starting point within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
-Tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs.
